From a hotel in the shadow of the Empire State Building to a converted paper factory in Queens, here are 20 top stays in the Big Apple for less than £150 a night
1 The Jane Hotel, West Village
There’s almost a village vibe about the bohemian-chic Jane, even though the Whitney Museum of American Art and the start of the High Line are near by. The hotel opened more than a hundred years ago and housed survivors of the Titanic. It’s been revamped since then, but the Ballroom bar, which attracts a late-night cool crowd, still has the air of an eccentric 1920s mansion. Rooms are modelled on ships’ cabins; they are small but perfectly formed. The White Horse Tavern, where Dylan Thomas drank, is a few streets away.

2 Yotel, Midtown
This buzzy hotel caters to a millennial crowd with its kiosk check-in, robot bag-storage, large outdoor terrace bar, and vending machines selling condoms and phone chargers. Rooms — there are more than 700 “cabins” — are small but make the most of space, with comfy beds that, at the touch of a button, convert into a couch. Higher floors have great views. There is free coffee and muffins each morning. You’re about a ten-minute walk west of Times Square and the subway is two blocks away.

3 The Brooklyn, Brooklyn
This is a good hotel for second or third-time visitors who want to see a different side of the Big Apple when they’ve ticked off all Manhattan’s sites the first time around. There are 34 rooms with exposed brick, rainhead showers, L’Occitane smellies, Nespresso machines and microwaves. You’re a ten-minute walk from Berg’n, a hip collection of food vendors and microbrewers (bergn.com).
